May 6, 2020 (Arlington, Virginia) –The Solar Impulse Foundation, as part of its mission to build a portfolio of cleantech innovations for profitable environmental solutions, has awarded the Efficient Solutions Label to PureCycle Technologies of Ironton, Ohio.

PureCycle Technologies’ process purifies polypropylene plastic waste and converts it into high-quality, ultra-pure recycled polypropylene. This patented process, developed by Procter & Gamble, uses a non-toxic solvent to remove color, odor and contaminants from polypropylene, widely used in packaging, textiles and plastic parts for the automotive and other industries. PureCycle’s facility is on track to divert more than 119 million pounds of polypropylene from landfills and incinerators, produce over 105 million pounds of ultra-pure recycled polypropylene per year, and encourage increased plastic collection with a comparable market price.

The Solar Impulse Efficient Solutions Label certifies clean solutions that support a circular economy in the fields of: Water, Energy, Construction, Mobility, Industry and Agriculture. As of May 6, 2020, 469 Efficient Solutions Labels have been awarded; 25 of these are from the United States. With no cost for application or certification, innovators are encouraged to apply for the Efficient Solutions Label to receive industry-specific mentorship, networking opportunities and support for scalability and economic growth.

“It’s critical to spur economic growth in ways that preserve the environment,” says Bertrand Piccard, founder of the Solar Impulse Foundation. “We intend to fast-track implementation of 1,000 profitable solutions that support a circular economy in accordance with the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.”

“Global demand for recycled resin with virgin-like properties is significant and has the added benefit of meaningful environment impact,” said Mike Otworth, CEO of PureCycle Technologies. “We are honored to receive this designation from Bertrand Piccard and the Solar Impulse Foundation. We are proud to be a solution in the efforts to eliminate plastic waste.”

PureCycle Technologies joins other labeled waste conversion solutions including Sopraloop (Strasbourg, France) that can turn nonrecycled PET plastic waste into safe home insulation (Watch Sopraloop video) and UBQ: (Tel Aviv, Israel) that converts household waste (including foods and unrecycled materials) into a bio-based composite material that replaces conventional oil-based plastics. About Bertrand Piccard and the Solar Impulse Foundation

One of the first to envision ecology through the lens of profitability, Bertrand Piccard advocates that solving climate change is a fantastic market opportunity. He speaks out against the absurdity of outdated and polluting devices and systems still in use today, and promotes the benefits of existing efficient technologies to motivate governments and industries to take climate

action. A medical doctor with a specialty in psychiatry, Bertrand Piccard considers that people don’t easily change their habits, and that solutions have to take into account a reluctance to change. The Solar Impulse Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, based in Lausanne, Switzerland, dedicated to making Piccard’s vision a reality. #1000Solutions to protect the environment in a profitable way is the foundation’s top priority for 2020. www.solarimpulse.com.
